Wounds That Need More Than Just a Bandage

When a wound refuses to heal, the solution isn’t always another dressing. Proper wound care means understanding why the wound isn’t healing and treating the underlying problem.

What is a wound?

A wound is a break or disruption in the normal structure of the skin and underlying tissue. Most acute wounds follow a natural healing process and gradually restore the affected tissue.

Chronic wounds, however, fail to heal normally or become stuck in the healing process. These wounds may persist for weeks or months and often require specialized evaluation and ongoing care.

Chronic wounds can occur for many reasons, including poor circulation, diabetes, pressure, infection, and other underlying conditions. Wounds affecting the feet and lower legs can be particularly difficult to heal when blood flow is reduced.
